Qualitative RPE Face Fit Testing
The respiratory system is one of the main routes of entry for harmful particles and dusts such as asbestos which may cause work related long term ill health. Therefore it is essential that Respiratory Personal Equipment (RPE) that is designed to protect us is working to its full potential.
Over the years, awareness to Occupational Health has greatly improved. Misuse of Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) has been fairly commonplace. From facial hair interfering with the seal on the face to tearing off the bottom strap of the respirator, to burning holes in the filter, allowing the wearer to smoke through it, has been common practice.
Legislation, through the COSHH Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) has been put in place in an attempt to eliminate this abuse and improve awareness even further.
The Face Fit Testing carried out by Bridge Safety and Training Ltd has been developed using the structure as laid down in the HSE 282/28 document. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) suggest that Qualitative Face Fit Testing should be conducted on all ‘tight fitting’ filtering face pieces and half mask respirators.
The testing involves a series of assessments to determine the effectiveness of the respirator using a respirator testing unit. Upon the completion of the test, a face fit test employee record is issued.
Only disposable respirators and negative pressure half masks can be tested using this type of Face Fit Testing Equipment.
